NCAMP and FARM-VA\u2019s Mediation Director\u00a0<\/span>participated<\/span>\u00a0in the American Farmland Trust\u2019s Southeast Area Zoom on Monday March 16, 2026<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Emily Liss, AFT\u2019s Farm Viability Policy Manager, works at the federal level in Washington, D.C. to follow and advocate for policies to protect farmland and farming operations nationally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ms. Liss gave a presentation on PFAS, which are Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances which are harmful to animals, food, humans, and soil.\u00a0Emily reported that PFAS come from the manufacture of water repellant and slippery materials.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Transported by water, PFAS\u00a0<\/span>move<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>accumulate<\/span>\u00a0according to the flow of water.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>These substances do not deteriorate\u00a0<\/span>so they<\/span>\u00a0will be around forever.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The contamination of farmland and crops has risen from the practice of spreading bio-wastes from sewer systems on farmland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>So far, only one state \u2013 Maine, has\u00a0<\/span>taken action<\/span>\u00a0and implemented programs to stop this contamination and compensate farmers for the losses they have suffered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>One of the mediators who handles cases for NCAMP and FARM-VA is Wanda Braithwaite-Baril.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Wanda is a navigator for the Maine Department of Agriculture in the mediation of PFAS\u00a0<\/span>cases there<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
