Previously, students had to wait up to 72 hours to receive their badge through the older printing process. Thanks to River’s hard work and innovation, this new system optimizes the safety badge process for both TIES employees and engineering students.

Students used to complete a digital safety badge course through Canvas. Once completed, the information was entered into a database, and TIES staff manually printed student badges. This process was suboptimal, as it required much time and effort to handle the printing process especially with several orders at once.

When the TIES office discovered their badge printing system had announced its end of life, they scrambled to find new alternatives to the system. Raspberry Pis, SQL queries, NFC tags, if you could name it, they likely prototyped it, but each solution came with more problems than the next. That’s when River stepped in and suggested Power Apps, which would fulfill all their project needs while meeting all university policy requirements.

River already had previous experience with Power Apps before, having built a new ticketing system for the TIES office from scratch. She worked for several months on building the new safety badge system, having learned new concepts while navigating significant challenges and deadlines along the way. On April 1, 2026, she successfully rolled out the new system for release.

But River isn’t finished yet; Her next big project seeks to create a ticketing system for the Makerspace for students to submit 3D printer designs to be printed by a trained operator via Power Apps. This system will allow for increased usage of machines in the Makerspace via virtual submission, and assist students in learning how to operate 3D printers through guided help, whether it be for classroom or personal projects.

“She’s one of the most talented employees, a creative thinker and problem solver,“ said Jason Ottie, Systems Specialist of the TIES Office. “She came up with an incredible idea to make the system digital to carry the old system on.”

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://affiliate.wcu.edu/cet-news/wp-content/uploads/sites/405/2026/09/DSC_0114-2-scaled.jpg” alt=”River helping a student check into the Makerspace” title_text=”River Bass’ Checking In a Student” _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

River Bass, a TIES Assistant and Electrical Computer Engineering Technology major, has recently developed a new safety badge system for the College of Engineering.
