Liberal Studies Program
The Office of the Provost and the Liberal Studies Committee invite participants to apply for a summer faculty development opportunity to be held on Tuesday, July 10 and Wednesday, July 11, 2018.
WCU’s Liberal Studies Program engages in an annual assessment of its curriculum to determine how well the program is meeting its stated student learning objectives. To this end, Goal 1.2 of WCU’s 2020 Vision articulates the broad objectives of the program as developing a student’s ability “to integrate information from a variety of contexts; to solve complex problems; to communicate effectively and responsibly; to practice civic engagement; and to clarify and act on purpose and values.”
To help assess if the program is meeting its goals, the Liberal Studies Committee is asking for faculty volunteers to help score Liberal Studies student artifacts. Over two days in July, all participants will attend a brief training in which they will receive instruction on interpreting the Liberal Studies rubrics and evaluating related student work. Faculty assessors will then work in groups of two to score the student artifacts assigned to them.
All participating faculty will receive a $400 stipend (in August paychecks) to compensate them for their time and effort; breakfast and lunch will be provided.
If you are interested in assessment-related professional development and/or helping to strengthen WCU’s Liberal Studies program, please consider applying! Directions below.
Any full or part-time instructional faculty member.
The session will run from Tuesday, July 10 through Wednesday, July 11. Participants should be willing to commit their time from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm on those dates.
All interested parties should submit: 1) a current CV, 2) a brief statement (no more than 250 words) articulating your experiences with assessment and/or Liberal Studies, and 3) their home Department Head’s approval for participation (an email will suffice).
Please note that previous assessment experience is not required to participate.
All application materials should be emailed to Holli Stillman (email@example.com) in the Office of Undergraduate Studies, 560 HFR, by 5:00 pm on Friday, March 23, 2018. Selected faculty will be contacted by April 2.
