CREATE AN ALTERNATIVE COURSE PLAN

Determine the delivery of instructional materials (micro-lectures, resources, discussion)

Identify the tools students need to be able to participate in class

Determine resources / training you need to teach with these tools

Determine resources / support students need to learn with these tools

  • Blackboard (share documents, create discussion boards, embed videos from YouTube, Panopto, and the Library, create virtual classrooms with Blackboard Collaborate, create tests and assessments).
  • Synchronous Tools
    • Office 365/Teams (collaboration on documents, social-media like conversation wall, Instant Meetings and whiteboard options through Teams Meetings. Click for more information about using Teams
    • Zoom.wcu.edu (virtual meetings) – use only for 1-1 conversation with students not as a replacement for your class session. Please contact the IT Help Desk at x7487 for assistance setting up a Zoom account (There is no charge for this service).
    • Panopto.wcu.edu (create videos and host videos) – access to Panopto must be created in your Blackboard course if you have never used Panopto before. Click for more information.
  • PowerPoint Online (Create and Share presentations online via OneDrive).

Determine a plan should you become unable to facilitate your course(s).

CREATE A COURSE MAP

Identify learning outcomes and planned units of instruction
Organize those items into units, modules, and lessons

  • Your course already has a blank Blackboard Shell. You can access Blackboard through the Quick Links on the WCU website or https://wcu.blackboard.com/Alternatively, log into MyWCU and access it through the Quick Links on the right. 
  • We can push a template to your shell that will give you a more guided modular structure. Don’t forget that you can make future weeks/modules in Blackboard unavailable while you are working on them.

Identify gaps where teaching artifacts will need to be created. 

Prioritize items (easily moved, alternative identified, needs to be created). Write the status next to each item listed.


 

    Identify the instruction

    • Projects, activities, and/or assignments can be easily moved online. Mode will need to switch to asynchronous, so plan on lecture outlines, short (5-8 minute recorded focused presentations), using the discussion board for questions and discussion of concepts.

    Identify possible alternatives for any aspect of the course that cannot be easily moved

    • Need ideas? The CFC can help!

    Accounting for access : Consider students affected by illness or who lose access due to emergency circumstances

    • If you or any of your students have low bandwidth at their place of shelter, you may consider having staggered or delayed due dates, alternative environments, or low bandwidth options.
    • For example, for all of your videos, it would be better to read from a transcript when you record so that you can send the transcript to students without the ability to view videos.
    • Think about allowing discussion boards or Teams chats as an alternative to or as an optional replacement for synchronous meetings.
    • If any of your students have low or spotty coverage or are relying on a cellular signal, we would advise that you either allow multiple tests or give alternative assignments.

    Don’t forget that many of the library.wcu.edu resources are available online as well, including an extensive catalog of educational films from Films on Demand


    IDENTIFY TOOL RESOURCES

    Identify platform or learning management system for instruction delivery

    • We use Blackboard at WCU. Each of your courses has a Blackboard course shell already created and students enrolled.  You can access Blackboard through the Quick Links on the WCU website or https://wcu.blackboard.com/.  Alternatively, log into MyWCU and access it through the Quick Links on the right.

    Inventory hardware you have available at home (device, camera, microphone, phone)

    • Identify hardware needs and seek out school resources to address gaps.

    Identify software and applications that you have available to you.

    Determine that students have access to all hardware and software you want them to use.

    Review available online support resources and bookmark them

    • All instructors of record at WCU have been enrolled in the Blackboard Course Blackboard Learn Instructor Training.
    • Log into Blackboard and It appears as a course in the Courses Where You Are a Student section on your dashboard.
    • The Coulter Faculty Commons has assembled a significant number of resources at cfc.wcu.edu.
    • help.blackboard.com also has a number of helpful resources.
    • Request training if it is not currently available

    The Coulter Faculty Commons Staff and the IT Help Desk have arranged to be available even if the campus is closed.
