There are many similarities between Blackboard and Canvas such as discussions, assignments, quizzes, and a gradebook. The difference betwe<\/span>en the two learning management systems is the foundational structure of the program and the process instructors and designers use to create an exceptio<\/span>nal learning environment. Canvas uses Modules as the primary function for creating and organizing\u00a0<\/span>a course.\u00a0 The gradebook is created by adding assignments, quizzes, and graded discussions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/i>those modules<\/span>. Whereas\u00a0<\/span>you could create gradebook columns\u00a0<\/span>in Blackboard<\/span>, you cannot in Canvas<\/span>\u00a0(they are created when you build an assignment).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Canvas\u00a0<\/span>is also<\/span>\u00a0built around quality instructional design principles and user interface design.\u00a0 This allows instructors to use Canvas in any modality: fully online, hybrid\/blended, and yes, even\u00a0<\/span>a total face-to-face course.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Coulter Faculty Commons has created a seq<\/span>u<\/span>enced learning experience\u00a0<\/span>called\u00a0<\/span>Priming the Canvas<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>for all instructors to learn how to maximize Canvas for their students<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Priming the Canvas is a workshop\/course built in Canvas and will be completed\u00a0<\/span>asy<\/span>n<\/span>chronously<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0allowing the most flexibility for individuals to manage around their schedule. There will also be regular synchronous<\/span>\u00a0open<\/span>\u00a0Zoom sessions for faculty who have completed\u00a0<\/span>some<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>all<\/span>\u00a0the modules in Priming the Ca<\/span>nv<\/span>as<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All instructors have been enrolled in Priming the Canvas as a student, providing the learner\u2019s viewpoint. Each instructor has also been provided with a Dev<\/span>elopment (DEV)<\/span>\u00a0course<\/span>\u00a0as the instructor, which provides a place to practice and create various assignments from the Priming the Canvas course.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
