_module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Now imagine that you are a young person, away from home for the first time, bereft of the support system that has created a sense of stability for your entire life.\u00a0 On top of that, your last year of high school was not the triumphant culmination of your primary educational journey that you anticipated.\u00a0 You\u2019ve arrived at the university feeling unprepared and unsure of what to expect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\" style=\"color: #000000\">As you acknowledge that you are dealing with unprecedented circumstances in the classroom take a moment to step back and recognize that your students are struggling as well and there are some things you can do to help them out.\u00a0 Here are a few ideas your fellow faculty members came up with during the January Teaching and Learning Day sponsored by the CFC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #592c88\"><b>Explicitly prioritize student well-being<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Provide a check-in at the beginning of each class to let students share what they are dealing with.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Record classes for students that can\u2019t attend and for review by those struggling to absorb content.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Suggest students take fewer classes.\u00a0 The delay in program completion will be rewarded by a richer learning experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Plan for more office hours.\u00a0 Your students need more opportunities to talk about their concerns and challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #592c88\"><b>Provide flexibility with your coursework\u202for course delivery\u202f<\/b><b><i>plan<\/i><\/b><b>, without overextending yourself<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Grant extensions frequently while having a \u201cno late work\u201d policy.\u00a0 This allows students to take ownership while also providing a timeline for communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Let the students decide the due days of their assignments.\u00a0 The Canvas default of Sunday at 11:59 pm is less than optimum.\u00a0 If a class can\u2019t agree on a day and time, propose the worst possible option to encourage compromise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Let the students choose between a few major exams and more frequent quizzes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #592c88\"><b>Connect institutional support with the classroom<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Remind students of the CAPS service. Share the information in class.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Discuss the available resources at the beginning of class.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">In Suite 201 (CEAP Student Success Center), advisors frequently discuss campus resources with students and provide links to these resources on their advising records every semester.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #592c88\"><b>Remember that language matters<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cIs Jean okay?\u201d vs \u201cDoes anyone know why Jean didn\u2019t come to class?\u201d\u00a0 Choose words that demonstrate concern for well-being rather than demanding what the excuse was for not being in class.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Use attendance to identify students who may need additional attention vs punitive grade action.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #592c88\"><b>Take care of yourself and find a support network<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Ask a colleague to go for a walk together on campus to discuss what happened and is happening \u2013 share the load on the road.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>I<span style=\"color: #592c88\">nfuse music, poetry, humor, and storytelling into your course<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #592c88\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Students do a weekly Word document (turn in every other week). They get an assignment document and they add to it. The document has creative sketches, ideas for mindfulness, expressiveness, favorite song, make a class playlist.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I always play music in class.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">My students write a letter to Covid so they can express feelings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I try not to talk about Covid so much in class, because there is more to our life than Covid. I want class to be a time for them to be away from stress, to be present, discuss their use of time, ways to use technology (and not), to create balance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Think about writing a SLO that is related to caring.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #592c88\"><b>Share your own story<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Will share an image of my art \/ work, also a reflection of that time in my life, what I was going through. That should encourage students to share more. I then asked them if this helped, and they said, yes, they liked seeing me fill out mine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Develop strong student relationships &#8211; they will maintain relationships after college.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Instructors share their stories with their students and for them to communicate through art, vulnerability, creativity, innovation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #592c88\"><b>Help students tell their stories<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Bardo provides exhibition tours and asks classes of students \u201cwhat do you see?\u201d It results in a freeform discussion, where they talk about how they interpret a work of art. This leads to further discussion \u2013 why is this object there, and how we all see different things.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The method used at Bardo is called \u201cVisual Thinking Strategies (VTS)\u201d. The exercise rooted in sensory awareness, and students enjoy how the modality and experience is different than sitting in a classroom.
