It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one\u2019s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one&#8217;s job; and reduced professional efficacy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Burnout is an \u201coccupational phenomenon\u201d and not everyone who finds that their job no longer aligns with their values can leave, at least right away. Kira Schabram, an assistant professor of management in the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington offers, \u201cemployees who cannot leave and are not getting support can still help themselves.\u201d Here are a few examples of things to try.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Communicate.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Dr. Kim Gorman, Director and Psychologist of WCU\u2019s Counseling and Psychological Services, recommends having a conversation with your supervisor about your burnout concerns. Having a conversation about expectations and solutions may result in a shift where work is not so burdensome. Communicating your struggle with your co-workers is also important. Dr. Gorman and her staff communicate strife and let one another know, \u201cI need grace this week.\u201d That sends the message to everyone that things may not go as smoothly as usual.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s in the best interest of employers to face burnout head-on, since the fallout of unchecked burnout, according to the Mayo Clinic, can include fatigue, excessive stress, sadness, anger or irritability, and serious diseases such as heart disease and high blood pressure. Alcohol and substance abuse are\u00a0also consequences of job burnout. If you work in a unit where expressing such concerns is unsafe or if you fear retaliation for speaking up, heed that as a red flag. In that case, you likely need to find employment elsewhere sooner rather than later.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Take your earned leave. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Take regularly scheduled time off.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ustravel.org\/press\/study-record-768-million-us-vacation-days-went-unused-18-opportunity-cost-billions\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The US Travel Association<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> reported that American workers did not use 768 million of their paid days off, losing more than $65 billon in benefits. No need to travel or spend money on your days off. Schedule regular days off and recharge at home. Watch your favorite movies, take naps, read, do whatever you need to do to recharge. If you have vacation leave hours, schedule vacation time regularly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Manage your calendar. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dan Rockwell, experienced leader and creator of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leadershipfreak.blog\/2023\/02\/24\/4-ways-to-do-less-and-get-more-done-today\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Leadership Freak<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> blog, recommends putting white space on your calendar.\u00a0 Dan writes, \u201covercommitment is sprinting into oblivion with your hair of fire.\u201d He also suggests investing your time, energy, and talent in one or two things a day.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Another recommendation related to calendar management offered by Dr. Kim Gorman is to \u201cchunk out\u201d your work outlook. For example, it may be daunting to look at the whole academic year or even a 16-week semester. Try creating chunks within those long time periods. For example, for a fall semester, this may look something like, \u201cI can make it to Labor Day in September, and I have two vacation days scheduled in October (see take your earned leave above). Next is Thanksgiving with a couple of days off and then on to Winter break. I can make it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Take breaks to do things you like.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 Dr. Schabram recommends incorporating things you look forward to into your weekly routine. Make a list of a few small things you can do throughout your day that make you happy and then do them. It can be as simple as applying your favorite hand lotion three times a day, packing one of your favorite meals (here\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feastingathome.com\/balela\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">balela\/chickpea salad<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that I love)\u00a0and eating lunch outdoors, or meeting a friend for a 5-minute walk around your building once or twice a day.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Show compassion for self and others.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Dr. Pope-Ruark writes, &#8220;practicing self-compassion, taking the time to regulate and honestly check in with ourselves with the same kindness we would offer others, is necessary to ward off or work through burnout\u201d (p. 125). Dr. Schabram\u2019s research shows that having compassion for yourself and others reduces feelings of burnout. Dr. Kristin Neff, Associate Professor, Educational Psychology Dept., University of Texas at Austin and co-creator of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/centerformsc.org\/train-msc\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mindful Self-compassion training program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> offers several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/self-compassion.org\/category\/exercises\/#guided-meditations\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">practices<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> including self-compassion exercises.
