In May, the Coulter Faculty Commons hosted the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Design Institute<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at the Waynesville Inn & Golf Club, bringing together faculty from across disciplines to explore how classroom questions can become publishable research.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Led by\u00a0SoTL\u00a0expert Dr. Laura Cruz\u00a0(Penn State)\u00a0and supported by Western Carolina faculty panelists Susan Braithwaite\u00a0(Health Sciences),\u00a0Chip Ferguson\u00a0(Engineering and Technology),\u00a0and\u00a0Katharine Mershon\u00a0(Philosophy and Religion), the Institute offered sessions on framing meaningful research questions, research design, and Institutional Review Board (IRB)\u00a0considerations,<\/span>\u00a0all\u00a0<\/span>in service to excellence in teaching and learning. The agenda focused on helping participants align their curiosity with methods that transform everyday classroom practice into evidence-based inquiry.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Many left energized by the realization that any teaching curiosity could become a\u00a0SoTL\u00a0project. \u201cIt is fantastic to know that there are experts in the CFC who can help with design,\u201d one attendee noted.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Faculty are already planning classroom changes,\u00a0emphasizing metacognition, involving students in research, and using\u00a0SoTL\u00a0to guide innovation. The Institute planted seeds that will grow into engaged classrooms and impactful scholarship.\u00a0Participants will be supported by the CFC throughout the summer with personalized coaching sessions and into the fall through a Write and Learn Collaborative, designed to help them implement classroom innovations, share progress, and support one another through dedicated collaboration and focused writing time.
