On July 4, 2026, the United States of America marked\u00a0250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone to reflect on our past, honor those who shaped our nation, and envision the future we want to build.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Foundations of American Democracy requirement is an invitation to do some of the most meaningful work in undergraduate education: helping students read carefully, think historically, and engage critically with the country’s foundational promises and its unfinished business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0ideas\u00a0represented in these\u00a0documents\u00a0reflect\u00a0ongoing\u00a0questions\u00a0that have shaped, and continue to shape, our American republic. Whether\u00a0you’re\u00a0teaching history, political science,\u00a0English, sociology, or a first-year seminar, the primary sources at the heart of this requirement offer rich material for inquiry.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Foundations of American Democracy documents, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, the Gettysburg Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Dr. Martin Luther King\u2019s Letter from a Birmingham Jail, are not just artifacts to be read once and summarized.
