{"id":2790,"date":"2017-01-09T20:08:20","date_gmt":"2017-01-09T20:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/cfc\/?p=2790"},"modified":"2021-06-07T13:43:48","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T17:43:48","slug":"alternative-assignments-for-snow-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/cfc\/blog\/2017\/01\/09\/alternative-assignments-for-snow-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternative assignments for Snow Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t let a snow day catch you off guard!\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had to revise my syllabus twice, changing the schedule, and as a result, changing the weight of the first two exams\u2026it\u2019s an unfortunate start\u2026not something that cannot be overcome.\u201d \u2013 Professor Brian Pilecki<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Technology-based assignment alternatives:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>Lecture \/ Discussion\n<ul>\n<li>Record a lecture (easy solution \u2013 you can use Microsoft PPT with voiceover or Panopto)<\/li>\n<li>Use a discussion board for students to discuss the topic and respond to each other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hold class synchronously \u2013 Zoom<\/li>\n<li>E-learning days using the LMS\n<ul>\n<li>Use Ted talks or other similar resources to prompt learning and discussion.<\/li>\n<li>Taping video or audio lectures ahead of time on subjects that can be placed anywhere in the semester, but need to be addressed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Remind101 \u2013 text messaging from teacher to student where numbers are anonymous<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><strong>What if students lose electricity?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Have students form groups at the beginning of the semester, share contact information that way if phones or computers die there is likely a possibility that someone still has a charge.
