{"id":285,"date":"2016-02-02T20:52:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T20:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sandbox.wcu.edu\/?p=285"},"modified":"2021-05-17T12:04:13","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T16:04:13","slug":"alternative-assignments-for-snow-days-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/cfc\/blog\/2016\/02\/02\/alternative-assignments-for-snow-days-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternative Assignments for Snow Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had to revise my syllabus twice, changing the schedule, and as a result, changing the weight of the first two exams\u2026.it\u2019s an unfortunate start\u2026not something that cannot be overcome.\u201d &#8211; Professor Brian Pilecki (<a href=\"http:\/\/thecollegevoice.org\/2015\/02\/18\/professor-perspectives-on-snowdays\/\">http:\/\/thecollegevoice.org\/2015\/02\/18\/professor-perspectives-on-snowdays\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Technology-based assignment alternatives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lecture \/ Discussion\n<ul>\n<li>Record a lecture (easy solution &#8211; you can use Microsoft PPT with voiceover or Panopto)<\/li>\n<li>Use a discussion board for students to discuss the topic and respond to each other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hold class synchronously &#8211; Zoom<\/li>\n<li>E-learning days online\n<ul>\n<li>Use Ted talks or other similar resources to prompt learning and discussion.<\/li>\n<li>Taping video or audio lectures ahead of time on subjects that can be placed anywhere in the semester, but need to be addressed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Remind101 &#8211; text messaging from teacher to student where numbers are anonymous<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What if students lose electricity?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have students form groups at the beginning of the semester, share contact information that way if phones or computers die there is likely a possibility that someone still has a charge.
