James Kirkland

Life is illuminated by individuals who leave profound legacies of love, service, and inspiration. James Bratton Kirkland, 84, son of AB and Gladys Kirkland, born on April 14, 1939, in Aiken County, SC, was such a beacon. Growing up in Ellenton and Williston, his life radiated optimism.

From his early days as a student school bus driver to coaching the Clio lady basketball to a championship, James was a force of positive influence. His career truly soared as school principal in Beaufort. The friends from those days remained throughout his life, a testament to his enduring connections. His unwavering dedication was exemplified when he selflessly fought for equitable education as Superintendent for Lee County.

In Swansea, Friday night football or visits to a local restaurant were occasions to connect, and chat with community members & former students. James never met a stranger.

Family was his anchor. Beautiful beaches of South Carolina, the mountain trails of North Carolina, and fishing with his grandchildren on Lake Murray were backdrops to countless cherished memories. He and his grandkids loved nothing more than the times spent solving interesting math challenges or just talking and laughing.

Ever curious, James’ interest in global events often related to the pursuits of his children, leading to rich discussions. A proud alumnus of the University of South Carolina (he loved his Gamecocks) and Western Carolina University, every accolade was a testament to his commitment to upliftment of others.

James leaves behind Linda Kirkland, the mother of his children; his children, Jay (Senaida), Dee (J.), and Bradley (Alison); cherished memories with his grandchildren, Addison, Madeline, Jadon, Emma Kate, Emelia, Sofia, and Bratton; and his younger brother who he adored, Ansel Brown Kirkland Jr.
