Jerry Wayne Carringer, a resident of Buford, GA, passed away on September 16, 2024, at Northside Forsyth Hospital at the age of 77 while surrounded by his family and friends. His passing was very peaceful as he knew that his future was secured in Jesus Christ.

Jerry grew up in a very small, western North Carolina town in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. He attended Western Carolina University where he received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1969. Jerry then enlisted in the United States Army just a few months after his college graduation and was deployed to Vietnam for one year, where he served under the 1st Calvary Division, which is one of the most decorated combat divisions of the United States Army. He was tasked with the front-line duty of repelling out of helicopters, in combat zones, usually under heavy enemy fire, to clear landing zones for the U.S. Armed Forces.

During his 4 years of honorable military service, Jerry was awarded with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and most notably, the Bronze Star Medal. After serving his country for four years, Jerry’s selfless discipline and service to others continued when he attended Seminary School at Rice University where he earned a Doctorate in Theology.

Jerry joined First Redeemer Church in 2002. Within a couple years, he became an Adult Sunday School Teacher. This was one of his many passions as this teaching opportunity brought him so much joy, peace and happiness. Jerry really enjoyed making people laugh with his wonderful sense of humor and his CIA (Christians in Action) class was always enthralled with his vast knowledge of the Bible. Jerry will always be known for his humor, compassion, unselfishness, forgiveness, fortitude and the endless amount of love that he had for his family and friends. He was a true man after God’s own heart.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 32 years, Margaret Carringer, his stepson, Chris Shields, stepdaughter, Amanda Moore, daughter Sara Carringer, son, Seth Carringer, brother, Chip Carringer (Yvette), sister, Pam Moody (Morris). He leaves behind granddaughters Katelyn and Lexie Hubbard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Willa Mae Carringer and his daughter Leah.

Visitation will be on Monday, September 23rd, 2024 from 10am-11am. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home at 11am following the visitation.
