Mary Carter Marshburn, age 74, of Lumberton, NC passed away on October 9, 2024 after a long illness. She was the much-loved wife of Wayne Marshburn and the mother of two sons, Nathan and Adam. Born in 1950 at Falls of  Neuse, NC, she was a 1968 graduate of Millbrook High School. She then attended Western Carolina University on a teaching scholarship, graduating in 1972. It was at Western Carolina University that she met the love of her life, Wayne, a fellow student from Maple Hill, NC. They were married in 1974 and Mary passed away just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mary spent 26 years teaching in the North Carolina Public School System, taking just a short hiatus to raise her sons when they were little. During her career, she taught children with special needs to include the visually impaired and had the honor of teaching with the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. She retired in 2007. Mary was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church since 1984, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a faithful Christian. It is in that hope and belief that she is now in a better place, reunited with her twin sister, Margaret, who passed away in July of this year.

In addition to her husband and sons, she is survived by her grandson, Luke Marshburn, and siblings, Jerry Carter, Martha Carter Poole, and Rick Carter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Beatrice Carter, and siblings, Bobby Carter and Margaret Carter Wilder.
