Mildred L. Wilson
Mildred Spicer Wilson, 76, of Swannanoa passed away on Monday, June 16, 2025 with family by her side. Born May 22, 1949 in Surry County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Bramlet and Ruby Spicer. She was an alumnus of Western Carolina University, where she received a Bachelor of Education in Special Education. After she graduated from college in her early 20s, she decided to make the mountains of Western Carolina her home. She was a special education teacher at Candler Elementary and then took a break to raise her daughter, Jamie. She then became the Educational Coordinator for the Black Mountain Home for Children, where she dedicated her life to serving children of the community until she retired in 2015. One of her greatest joys was to foster academic success, provide a positive learning environment for students, and assist in the journey to a higher education. Mildred treasured time with family and her beloved dog Higgins. She found happiness in gardening, planting flowers, sewing, canning, and sitting on the porch socializing. She had the gift of storytelling, and everyone would say that she never knew a stranger. She loved country cooking and made the best biscuits and gravy in town. She was a lifelong learner and was a whizz at math. In addition, she led a selfless life and loved serving others. Her generosity, kind spirit, and loving personality will be remembered by all. Surviving are her spouse of over 50 years, James David Wilson; daughter, Jamie Larson and her spouse, Thomas Jon, of Marshall, NC; sister, Margaret Whitley and her spouse, Donald, of New Bern, NC; stepmother, Sarah Spicer of Elkin, NC; sister-in-law, Brenda Moore, her spouse, Mike, of Swannanoa, NC, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mildred will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who crossed her path in life.
