Virgil H. Corriher
Virgil Henderson Corriher, Jr., age 80 of Salisbury, passed away December 31, 2025.
Virgil attended Davidson County High School and graduated from Western Carolina College in 1967. He then attended the University of Tennessee where he graduated in 1969 with a Master of Science in Social Work. His internship was completed at the VA in Knoxville. Upon graduation, he worked at Rowan County DSS in protective child care services until 1971. He was then employed by the TriCounty Mental Health Clinic as a psychiatric social worker. He was a NC Certified Forensic Evaluator and a member of the National Academy of Certified Social Workers.
Virgil was an avid reader, especially enjoying reading about the civil war from books in his extensive book collection. He also enjoyed collecting coins and was an expert numismatist.
He was a jack of all trades but being outdoors was his passion. He loved working the land. He was not only a farmer but also, in the past, raised and sold beef. He was also an experienced builder and not only built the home he lovingly shared with his wife but many other properties he “flipped.” He loved to cook and thankfully, according to his wife, took up the mantel for cooking. He was an amazing individual to whom his family always turned to when they needed not only something fixed but advice, love, and support. His grandchildren affectionately called him “Bubba.”
He is a life-long member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he was an Extraordinary Minister. He was also a member of the handbell choir and the cemetery committee.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Vergil and Frances Corriher.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy Fite Corriher; daughter (whom he lovingly called Crusher), Whitney Leigh Elizabeth Lingle (Cory); three grandchildren, Emma, Graham and Hudson; and brother-in-law, Ron Fite (Jodi).
The family will receive friends 10 -11 a.m. Wednesday (January 7) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. with The Very Reverend John T. Putnam and Reverend John J. Eckert officiating. Burial will follow the service in Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 375 Lumen Christi Lane, Salisbury, NC 28147.
