Herman G. Shamel
Herman graduated from Old Town high school, having attended there from grades one to twelve. It was there that he met his “Forever Love” Peggy Conrad in the fifth grade. He attended Western Carolina College on a basketball scholarship, having graduated as captain of the team. Years later, he returned to serve on the alumni council. After having been a member of Mt. Tabor church as a boy, Herman joined New Hope Methodist upon marrying Peggy Conrad on Sept 3rd, 1955. He served in various capacities, especially working with the youth. He served in the US Navy as a Corpsman in Portsmouth, NH, and Newport, RI. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he joined Wachovia Bank, now Wells Fargo, beginning his career in Greensboro, NC, and later in Asheboro, NC, where he was very active in the Jaycees. After returning to Winston-Salem in 1969, he received “Man of the Year” award. Herman retired from Wachovia as a VP in Sales Finance. After retirement, he especially enjoyed golf and bridge, but most of all, his family and their activities and travels.
Herman is pre-deceased by parents and siblings; Fred (Betty Jo), Elmo (Louise), and Evelyn Sapp (Johnny). He is survived by wife Peggy; sons Gray (Mary) and Thomas (Valerie); grandsons Aaron (Jenifer), Noah (Carlie), Tommy; granddaughter Heather Shamel; great-granddaughter Caroline Shamel.
Services will be conducted at New Hope Methodist Church on April 19th at 3pm with Melanie Nichols officiating. The family will receive friends from 2pm to 2:45pm.
