Dr. Mary Margaret McCurry Ingle of Asheville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the age of 84.
Mary Margaret was born in Morganton, North Carolina, on November 19, 1941. She later moved to Asheville, where she attended St. Genevieve’s of the Pines, graduating with the Class of 1959. She continued her education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, followed by graduate degrees from Western Carolina University and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Mary Margaret began her professional career in social work in Boone, North Carolina, and Gadsden, Alabama. Upon returning to Western North Carolina, she found her calling in education, first teaching mathematics and science and later serving in a number of school leadership positions. Her career included serving as Principal of Saluda School, Assistant Superintendent of Hendersonville City Schools and Henderson County Public Schools, and Associate Superintendent of Polk County Schools. Through decades of service, she dedicated much of her professional life to the students, teachers, and schools of Western North Carolina.
Following her retirement in 2011, Mary Margaret continued to make Asheville her home and remained deeply involved in the community she loved. Central United Methodist Church was an important part of her life for more than 75 years, where she generously gave her time and talents through service and volunteer activities. She was also an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, where she enjoyed the fellowship of her sisters and formed meaningful friendships with women throughout the Asheville community.
Mary Margaret was known for her generosity and for the many ways she invested in the lives of others. A lifelong educator and mentor, her influence extended well beyond the classroom and school system. She encouraged students and fellow educators throughout her career and continued to mentor others through her church, supporting them in their faith and service. Above all, Mary Margaret loved her family deeply. Her granddaughter, Lily, was her pride and joy, and she took great pleasure in supporting and encouraging her education, athletics, and faith.
Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Gathing Ramsey; her father, Joel Clyde McCurry; her stepfather, Joseph Franklin Ramsey; and her beloved husband, Ervin Ingle.
She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Ingle Everette (Brad); her granddaughter, Lily Everette; her brother, Robert McCurry (Pat); and her sister, Elizabeth Thomas (Don).
She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, David McCurry (Tammy) and their children, Courtney and Zach; Julie Orthober (Dave) and their daughters, Madeline and Mariella; and Drew Thomas (Lauren) and their son, Avett.
A memorial service celebrating Mary Margaret’s life will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.
