Carol E. Camenga

Carol was born on August 25, 1953, in Coral Gables, Florida to Eugenia and Howard Harrison. The family relocated to Tryon, North Carolina and Carol graduated from the old Polk Central HS in 1971. Carol then attended Western Carolina University, graduating in 1975, the first in her family to obtain a university degree. She worked as a school librarian for two schools in Rutherford County, then returned to Florida to work for the Clearwater Public Library and later became the branch manager of the New River Branch Library of the Pasco County System.

In Florida, she would meet the love of her life, John Camenga, also a library employee. Carol and John became a couple and later married, having their only child Michaela in 1990.

They would relocate to North Carolina to be close to Carol’s family and nearer to John’s family in Massachusetts. Carol then worked in the Hickory Library and joined John in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library System in later years.

In Charlotte, Carol became a library branch manager with the Plaza-Midwood Branch and later the Hickory Grove Branch until 2010. After her retirement, she enjoyed a relaxed lifestyle in her Matthews home and neighborhood until succumbing to her illness. With the help of Liberty Hospice, John and Michaela were able to bring their wife and mom home so she could pass comfortably and surrounded by her immediate family.

Carol is survived by her husband John and daughter Michaela, her brother Chris and his wife Lisa of King’s Mountain and their two daughters. Carol is also survived by her sister Laura and her husband Karl of Belmont. She was preceded in death by her brother Steve.

John and Michaela would like to thank Liberty Hospice Services, especially Nurse Holly, CNA Blue, and Chaplain Ed who brought aid and comfort to Carol and her family during Carol’s final weeks.
