David S. Hewes

David Stephen Hewes, born on February 9th, 1972 to William Francis Hewes II and Sally Tardin Hewes, in Fulton County, GA. He was a man whose life journey was as rich and flavorful as the dishes he created. He departed this world on January 29th, 2026, in Alamance County, NC, leaving behind a legacy filled with joy, adventure, and the sweet aroma of his famous desserts.

David’s vibrant spirit was nurtured by his loving family, survived by his wife Traci, his proud sons Roy Carter and Davis Jackson, and his cherished granddaughter Chloe. His guidance and love will continue to resonate in the lives of his mother Sally, her husband Dell, his siblings Bill, Becky, and Dusty, his adored nieces Kate and Charlsie, a myriad of cousins and friends.

A steward of service and courage, David’s life was marked by his time as a Sergeant in the US Army, where he served with distinction at fire departments in Yuma, Arizona, and Fort Greely, Alaska. His passion for learning led him to the Art Institute of Atlanta Culinary School and Western Carolina University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medicine. David’s rich tapestry of life experiences included roles as a chef, paramedic, telemetry technician, mechanic, and truck driver. He was not just the head chef and owner of the joyful Paradise Cafe; he was also the wheel behind Hewes Transport, navigating the roads with the same precision he used in the kitchen.

With a generous heart and gifted hands, David loved to feed people. His key lime pies and cheesecakes were the highlight of many gatherings. Dave was also an explorer at heart. His travels with his wife to Jamaica, as part of their study with WCU at the Sav-La Mar Hospital and the Sav Fire Brigade, showcased their shared love of adventure and service to others. His playful essence was evident as he partook in snorkeling and surfing at the beach, cheered for his beloved Cubs, indulged in golf, and soared through the skies skydiving. His love for loud music was undeniable, with the beats of Rush and Jimmy Cliff fueling his soul.

Dave Hewes was funny and adventurous; he embraced life with open arms and a heart ready to laugh. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all,” as Helen Keller once said, and David lived every moment as a grand escapade. He inspired those around him to take the leap, to taste the richness of life, and to never shy away from the recipe for happiness.

As we celebrate the life of David Stephen Hewes, we not only remember the meals he crafted or the heights he soared to, but the uplifting spirit he carried that encouraged everyone he met to live their fullest life. His zest for life left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Though the fire in the hearth of his presence has dimmed, the warmth he generated will continue to comfort us through the tapestry of memories he lovingly created.
