Albert Reid Black, Jr. of Lake Wylie,\u00a0SC passed away on June 25, 2026.\u00a0He was born on April 4,\u00a01946\u00a0in Charlotte, NC to\u00a0Julia\u00a0Vaughn Willmann\u00a0and\u00a0Dr. Albert Reid Black, Sr.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Reid was a graduate of\u00a0Myers Park\u00a0High School and Western Carolina University.\u00a0As a professional,\u00a0Reid spent\u00a0more than 30\u00a0years as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the state of NC.\u00a0In that\u00a0role\u00a0he helped hundreds of individuals who needed life skills and health care to live their lives\u00a0well.\u00a0\u00a0For decades,\u00a0his \u201dsecond\u00a0job\u201d was delivering\u00a0The Charlotte Observer. He woke\u00a0daily\u00a0at 4:00am to pick up papers and run his route,\u00a0a testament to his\u00a0dedicated\u00a0work ethic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Reid\u00a0was compassionate and thoughtful.\u00a0He loved\u00a0dancing and\u00a0music,\u00a0and\u00a0sang along with a resonate baritone voice to\u00a0songs that were\u00a0always\u00a0playing.\u00a0Reid\u00a0was a man in constant motion\u00a0which served him well whether he was working in his yard or house. He \u201ccollected\u201d plants and trees for the yard like an antique dealer\u00a0who collected old things. Speaking of antiques, he loved\u00a0them all — glassware, marbles, trains,\u00a0album covers,\u00a0and\u00a0toys.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n When he\u00a0was not\u00a0planting a new Japanese maple or buying another\u00a0beautiful vase, he was working on the house. Reid could\u00a0build or repair anything\u00a0with a mixture of skill and imagination.\u00a0He loved living lake life and all its adventures. Lots of memories and pictures serve as proof that\u00a0when he was behind the wheel of a\u00a0boat,\u00a0he\u00a0was a man in his natural environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Most of all, Reid loved Betty Ann deeply.\u00a0She was\u00a0the true\u00a0center\u00a0of all he did in life.\u00a0After Betty Ann’s\u00a0death in December 2025, he missed her daily.\u00a0Together Reid and Betty Ann loved to travel\u00a0— to the beach, the mountains, or any adventure\u00a0they could imagine, and these vacations\u00a0often included\u00a0family and\u00a0friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Reid is preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved wife of 40 years Betty Ann Cooper Black;\u00a0a\u00a0sister Vickie\u00a0MacDonald; and his \u201cchosen family\u201d Rex and Jennie Easterly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Smith\u00a0(Richard)\u00a0of Dallas, TX, and grandchildren Abby and Greg;\u00a0son James Reid Black (Maria Grace Edwards)\u00a0of Lake Wylie,\u00a0and grandson Elijah James Black; nephew Reid\u00a0McFarland\u00a0(Neil) of Portland, OR; and sister-in-law Tonya Easterly Vickery (Jeffrey) of Cullowhee, NC, and her daughters Elizabeth (Elliott) and Ally (AJ).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 14 at M.L.
