{"id":16320,"date":"2021-04-10T20:49:12","date_gmt":"2021-04-10T20:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=16320"},"modified":"2022-03-12T22:44:48","modified_gmt":"2022-03-12T22:44:48","slug":"communication-students-awarded-2021-2022-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2021\/04\/10\/communication-students-awarded-2021-2022-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"Communication students awarded 2021-2022 scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, March 30, members of WCU\u2019s Communication Department gathered to recognize recipients of the 2021-2022 scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was incredibly challenging that we had so many really wonderful applicants and its really telling that all of you really wonderful young women are here today because it was through your hard work and all of the things that you put in, that we really want to congratulate you on your hard work and celebrate you winning these scholarships,&#8221; said Dr. Candy Noltensmeyer, chair of the Communication Department scholarship committee.<\/p>\n<p><u>Meltzer Scholarship<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The Meltzer Scholarship is awarded from the College of Arts and Sciences to two students in each program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16322 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Hailey-Pait-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>\u201cAs someone who has grown up in an extremely underfunded and poor community, this scholarship means the world to me and my family,\u201d communication department recipient Hailey Pait said. \u201cThere\u2019s no words to describe just how much this award will help us. I am so grateful. Thank you so much for believing in me. Thank you for this scholarship. I promise to work as hard as I can and to help spread the kindness that you have shown me to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16327 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Tyra-Syverson-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am eternally grateful for receiving the Meltzer Scholarship, alongside my peer and friend Hailey Pait. I am thankful for the opportunity to continue my education at Western Carolina University because of this monumental scholarship,\u201d Tyra Syverson said. \u201cThank you to all involved in awarding this honor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Roy A. Taylor Scholarship<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16325 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Rebecca-Hart-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Rebecca-Hart-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Rebecca-Hart.jpg 431w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The scholarship is specifically awarded to a rising senior working towards a Communication degree. Learn more about the selection criteria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcu.edu\/WebFiles\/PDFs\/CTD_Taylor_Scholarship.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was surprised and honored to hear about the scholarship,\u201d winner Rebecca Hart said. \u201cCollege isn&#8217;t cheap, so any support is appreciated! I love being a communication major because I find that many of the skills we learn are transferable across all fields. But I, specifically, enjoy Western&#8217;s communication department for the support they provide us financially in scholarships and academically in the mentoring we receive from our professors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16323 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Jessica-Posa-4-250x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u><br \/>\nThe Patrick Lee Carmody Fund Scholarship<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The fund strives to provide continuing support for WCU students majoring in Communication. Read more about the selection process <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcu.edu\/WebFiles\/PDFs\/CTD_Carmody_Scholarship.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised when I was chosen for a scholarship from the department,\u201d recipient Jessica Posa said. \u201cI\u2019m very grateful to be recognized for my academic achievement and work in the department!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16324\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Melianne-Raymond-235x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" \/>Dr. Kathleen Wright Scholarship<\/u><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship is in commemoration of Dr. Kathleen Wright\u2019s 35-year career at WCU. She was a professor and head of the Department of Communication. Wright served on every university committee and was eventually awarded the Paul A. Reid Service Award.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was surprised and honored to hear that I was chosen for this scholarship,\u201d student Melianne Raymond said. \u201cIt&#8217;s such a blessing to me and I feel motivated to keep doing my best each semester, knowing I have the support of all my teachers and advisors in the Communications Department.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Arthur Anderson Endowed Scholarship Fund<\/u><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16326\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2021\/04\/Tessa-Bradshaw-300x271.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"293\" \/>Arthur Anderson was a New York-based actor for more than 70 years. The scholarship is awarded to students who are obtaining a degree in the performing arts, such as radio and television. The scholarship is only granted in alternating years in conjunction with the School of Stage and Screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was honestly very surprised that I had been chosen for a scholarship by the Communication Department,\u201d Tessa Bradshaw said. \u201cThis came as a huge surprise because I am still rather new to the program and I did not expect this to happen. Despite my initial shock, I\u2019m glad that I was awarded a scholarship because I plan on being a lifelong student. I don\u2019t know what my overall goal for my education is, but I plan to attend graduate school after I graduate with my bachelor\u2019s degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s particularly fitting being on this committee and that this is the very end of March, which is Women\u2019s History Month, that somehow inadvertently, all six of our scholarships went to and were earned by six amazing women in our department and I could not be prouder of the six of you young women and we can\u2019t wait to see how you continue to make your mark on history,&#8221; Noltensmeyer said.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship recipients were decided by a committee consisting of Dr. Candy Noltensmeyer, William Gambill and Dr. Jim Manning.
