{"id":17722,"date":"2022-12-01T20:57:08","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T20:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=17722"},"modified":"2022-12-04T17:22:07","modified_gmt":"2022-12-04T17:22:07","slug":"the-story-behind-the-secretary-lindsay-mathis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2022\/12\/01\/the-story-behind-the-secretary-lindsay-mathis\/","title":{"rendered":"The story behind the Administrative Support Assistant &#8211; Lindsay Mathis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lindsay Mathis earned her B.S. in Anthropology at Western Carolina University and began working as the administrative support assistant for WCU\u2019s Communication Department in December 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17723 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2022\/12\/Lindsay-Mathis-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2022\/12\/Lindsay-Mathis-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2022\/12\/Lindsay-Mathis.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Originally from Asheville, Mathis grew up watching the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band and was also involved in her middle and high school marching band. A friend told her about the position at WCU, and Mathis jumped on the opportunity to apply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI had been working in the medical field for several years and needed a change. So, when my friend told me that Don Connelly, the department head at the time, was a great guy to work for, I decided to apply,\u201d said Mathis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mathis handles most of the day-to-day operations of the communication department. Her duties include making purchases, keeping track of departmental budgeting, creating course sections, and handling all student working position postings and the hiring process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moreover, one thing that has surprised Mathis is \u201chow amazing working in the Department of Communication is. Everyone is so appreciative,\u201d said Mathis. She admires all the faculty members and students, and \u201cmeeting and talking to our awesome students\u201d has been the most rewarding part of her role. Mathis feels inspired to continue in her position, knowing she works for a university that makes a difference in students&#8217; lives and western North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lastly, Mathis encourages students to choose communication as a major because of the opportunities students can gain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is so much opportunity with majoring in communication,\u201d said Mathis. \u201cBefore working for the department, I didn\u2019t know how important communication was in almost every career you can think of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students can find and contact Mathis with any questions at her office located in Stillwell building office 233A.
