{"id":17884,"date":"2023-03-29T16:12:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-29T16:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=17884"},"modified":"2023-03-29T16:12:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-29T16:12:11","slug":"dr-noltensmeyer-presents-at-sotl-in-savannah-ga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2023\/03\/29\/dr-noltensmeyer-presents-at-sotl-in-savannah-ga\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Noltensmeyer presents at SoTL in Savannah, Ga."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17885 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2023\/03\/1604076599271-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Dr. Candy Noltensmeyer presented at a conference for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning on Tuesday, Feb. 28 and Wednesday, March 1 in Savannah, Ga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Noltensmeyer presented on \u201cTell me a story: Student Perceptions of the Effect of Story on Learning\u201d and was a co-author along with Kristy Doss, Lisa Bloom and Katharine Mershon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She chose to present on this topic because she is interested in how students learn and is always trying to find new ways to engage students and make learning more fun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many people that are interested in pedagogy attended this conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Noltensmeyer said that the survey results indicated that student engagement, understanding of concepts, and ability to apply concepts all increased significantly when stories were used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI wanted evidence to support what I have been seeing in the classroom. By sharing these results, I have evidence to support what I have been seeing in students for years! If I can share this strategy with other faculty, this project has the potential to improve learning in numerous ways\u201d, she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Noltensmeyer received the opportunity to present at this conference by the research team submitting the presentation, and it then got blind reviewed and accepted. The acceptance rate is about 60% for this particular conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She started out as a communication minor during undergraduate studies, but after taking a theory class, she loved it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI took a theory class and was just fascinated! I started graduate school a year later and never looked back,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Noltensmeyer\u2019s favorite aspects of communication are interacting with the audience and relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI love attempting to understand all facets of relationships as they continuously shift,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At this time, there are no upcoming presentations that Dr. Noltensmeyer has planned, but she usually presents a project once or twice a year.
