{"id":18125,"date":"2024-03-25T14:26:37","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T14:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=18125"},"modified":"2024-03-25T14:31:26","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T14:31:26","slug":"bryan-queen-alumni-feature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2024\/03\/25\/bryan-queen-alumni-feature\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Feature: Bryan Queen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bryan Queen, a professional in broadcasting and news, has just been promoted to News Director in February 2024 at News 13\/WLOS, in Asheville, North Carolina.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queen has been in the broadcasting field for over 25 years and has been nicknamed, &#8220;Breaking News Bryan.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queen also got an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emmy nomination for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;News Excellence&#8221; two times in the last four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With his new role, Queen oversees a newsroom of over 75 journalists and digital production professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queen enjoys his day-to-day work as a broadcasting professional, \u201cbecause of the fast pace and it\u2019s something different every day.\u00a0 Local journalism matters, and I like telling people\u2019s stories. Everyone has a story to tell,\u201d said Queen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queen graduated from Western Carolina University, WCU, in 1992 with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in both Radio\/Television and Political Science. Queen also earned a master&#8217;s degree in Public Affairs at WCU in 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve just always known I wanted to be in broadcasting and WCU was a great fit\u201d, said Queen.\u00a0 \u201cThe station-run radio station was also a big draw for me, and I ended up being a DJ, News Director, and General Manager during my time at WCU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queen shared he liked the hands-on experiences at WCU and appreciated the small student\/teacher ratio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe small class size allowed me to flourish and to stay engaged,\u201d said Queen. \u201cProfessors were very caring, and the radio station provided a very valuable start to my career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As advice for students who are pursuing a broadcasting major at WCU, \u201cdo what you are passionate about,\u201d said Queen. \u201cJournalism still matters, but in today\u2019s world, you have to come at it from a multi-platform strategy. Don\u2019t limit yourself to one thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe industry is definitely changing at a rapid pace.
