{"id":18178,"date":"2024-05-13T04:52:13","date_gmt":"2024-05-13T04:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=18178"},"modified":"2024-05-13T04:52:13","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T04:52:13","slug":"the-communication-department-student-showcase-spring-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2024\/05\/13\/the-communication-department-student-showcase-spring-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"The Communication Department Student Showcase &#8211; Spring 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The communication department hosted its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">first department-wide <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Showcase at the Apodaca Science Building on May 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Community members, alumni, university leaders, faculty and staff as well as all the communication students attended the Student Showcase event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The showcase was also combined with the PRSA WNC event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Communication and public relations professionals from WNC joined with all communication students during the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Communication Department Student Showcase features outstanding student work from courses across our curriculum, including public relations, health communication, journalism and broadcasting,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Betty Farmer, professor of communication and organizational consultant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Highlights from the Student Showcase included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Weathers\u2019 students with digital health stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Matt Binford\u2019s students with productions from TV2 and Whee-TV.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Selected WordPress website portfolios from COMM 296 and COMM 496 students<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student organizations, SPJ, Whee-TV, Western Carolinian, Western Carolina Journalist and PRSSA sharing their work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crisis communication students launched a Crisis Communication Resources Website for the community that features hundreds of articles, books, websites, and videos that can help organizations prepare and respond effectively to crises.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A professional conference-style poster highlighting the ethical issues around the use of AI in public relations and communications<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to the Communication Student Showcase, the event also shared the communication department scholarship winners and celebrated student award winners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, Professor Debra Connelly and I have collaborated to create large posters of nine outstanding Communication Department alumni, which will be displayed as part of the showcase,\u201d said Farmer. \u201cThese posters spotlight alumni serving in high-level corporate communications positions and working for major media, such as the BBC, ESPN, CBS and NBC Peacock. It was so very satisfying working on these alumni posters. You remember students from their time at Western and it is a joy to see them succeed in their careers.
