{"id":18247,"date":"2024-10-30T15:53:20","date_gmt":"2024-10-30T15:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=18247"},"modified":"2024-10-30T15:53:20","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T15:53:20","slug":"students-take-on-hurricane-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2024\/10\/30\/students-take-on-hurricane-relief\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Take on Hurricane Relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A senior communication student, Ashley Elliott organized crisis care packages for children in the surrounding Western North Carolina communities after Hurricane Helene&#8217;s destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile collecting supplies for immediate needs like food and water were absolutely crucial,\u201d said Elliott. \u201cI was not seeing direct efforts to help children impacted by this crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Elliott held a one-day drive and asked for small toys and coloring books to create care packages for children affected by the hurricane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donations from college students helped her put together 18 care packages which were designed for different age ranges and were donated to a local church in Waynesville, North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, communication professor, Dr. Mindy Weathers, contacted Elliott and helped organize an additional care package assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe collected many material donations and over $750 in monetary donations,\u201d said Elliott. \u201cWith this, 100 new care packages<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">were put together!
