{"id":18369,"date":"2025-04-30T06:11:31","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T06:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=18369"},"modified":"2025-05-01T17:30:00","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T17:30:00","slug":"alumni-appreciation-ryan-carpenter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2025\/04\/30\/alumni-appreciation-ryan-carpenter\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Appreciation: Ryan Carpenter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Western Carolina University communication department alumnus, Ryan Carpenter, shared his career journey and insight as an audio professional.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Carpenter graduated from WCU in May 2024 with a B.S. in communication, concentrating in broadcasting, and a minor in sociology.<\/p>\n<p>A year after graduating, he began working as a primary audio technician (A1) at ESPN in Charlotte, NC, but has had various production experiences.<\/p>\n<p>In his freshman year of high school, he worked at small events and church productions.<\/p>\n<p>He further expanded his production experience in college through his work as an athletic video production assistant for WCU\u2019s ESPN+ production and freelance opportunities with companies like Tupelo Honey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not until WCU that I began to consider production as a career. I began working for WCU\u2019s sporting events and when I was home, I would help with Fox Sports in Charlotte, NC, where I had my internship,\u201d said Carpenter. \u201cOut of college, I did light freelance in the Charlotte area until I accepted my contract at ESPN.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Education was valuable to Carpenter as it gave him foundational knowledge, an idea of where to start and ways to improve outside of school.<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter mentioned that networking is invaluable in broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hear it a lot. \u2018You need to network,\u2019 but I don&#8217;t think people understand. From working with the Panthers to CLT FC, or Fox Sports to local dirt racing, it has all been because of networking,\u201d said Carpenter.<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter further emphasized that one mistake can end a career in TV, advising, \u201cNever burn a single bridge.
