{"id":18547,"date":"2026-02-28T05:17:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T05:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/?p=18547"},"modified":"2026-03-01T05:19:50","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T05:19:50","slug":"western-students-attend-social-media-week-conference-at-clemson-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affiliate.wcu.edu\/comm\/blog\/2026\/02\/28\/western-students-attend-social-media-week-conference-at-clemson-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Western Students Attend Social Media Week Conference at Clemson University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Department of Communication at Clemson University hosted its annual Social Media Week Conference, Monday, Feb. 23, to Thursday, Feb. 26, and for the first time, invited other universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Western Carolina University invited communication students from all concentrations to attend and network with students, professors, and professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students from Western attended two days of the conference and heard from speakers from large-scale companies like Barstool and ESPN, as well as more local groups and non-profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Social Media Week was a valuable learning experience for me that highlighted how creativity, authenticity, and strategy intersect in digital communication,\u201d said Erica Thaggard, president of the Health Communication Club. \u201cSpeakers from major organizations such as Canva, Live Nation, Hershey and ESPN emphasized the importance of monitoring trends while maintaining a genuine brand voice. One memorable example came from the Georgia Aquarium, which shared how posting videos of animals like sea lions dancing to trending songs can boost engagement while staying true to their mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The conference connected students with the speakers they listened to in person and through LinkedIn, and gave an insight into how the communication department at Clemson University works and experienced their Social Media Listening Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each seminar brought a different aspect of social media and communication work to students, and provided insight into the changing professional landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs a student interested in social media\u2019s impact on public relations and storytelling, I was able to gain a lot from attending Wednesday\u2019s Social Media Week sessions,\u201d said Savannah Snell, a sophomore communication major. \u201cOverall, I\u2019m so glad for what I got to learn. Getting to go to conferences fuels my love of learning and connection. I\u2019m so grateful this is a part of my learning here at WCU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speakers discussed topics such as ethical storytelling, the fast-paced environment of social media, and what audience awareness looks like in the professional world.
