The course will discuss current research and host guest speakers through a generous gift from the Barnes Family Foundation of North Carolina. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"update-components-text relative update-components-update-v2__commentary \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span class=\"break-words tvm-parent-container\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Our Liberty over lunch seminar hosted our first guest scholar, <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/appalachian-state-university\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Appalachian State University<\/a> Economist and <a id=\"ember1608\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/the-knee-center-479122134\/\">The Knee CSOR<\/a> Research Affiliate, <a id=\"ember1609\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/shishir-shakya\/\">Shishir Shakya<\/a>, on September 1st.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He presented two working papers:<br \/>\n1. Impacts of Certificate-of-need State Laws on Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities and Services<br \/>\n2. Access to Mental Health Care Services &amp; Suicide Rates in the United States<\/p>\n<p>Professor Shakya did an amazing job describing the intuition of his research, the potential types of endogeneity present, and how his methods address theses types of endogeneity.<\/p>\n<p>He also chatted one-on-one with many students about their career aspiration.
