CAPS students

WCU Instruction is resuming this week, but online. There are many technologies that faculty are using to interact with students. Lectures are now being delivered via conferencing tools like Zoom, MS Collaborate and Blackboard Ultra. Some faculty are even using these to have virtual office hours. Some of these modes allow for a level of personal contact that often doesn’t happen with in-person instruction. What can WCU faculty do when mental health issues in a student might start to be apparent given the stress of the transition and the COVID health crisis?

Faculty should know that the resources for WCU students from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are just as available as in a regular semester. CAPS is still open, although with remote operations with staff ready to help. If faculty feel that a student is struggling, they should consult the Helping Students guide available in the Student Concern Response Team (SCRT) website. The guide offers step-by-step procedures, resources, and forms for reporting students of concern. Faculty should remember that they may be the only point of contact a student has with the WCU community, and that now is the time to become familiar with resources to direct students.
