Summary of Novel:

The Ear, The Eye and The Arm is a science-fiction story about a boy named Tendai and his brother and sister Kuda and Rita.  They live in a futuristic world in Zimbabwe, Africa in the year 2194. The children live with their mother and father in a big house that is guarded by robots and a robot dog.  Everyday the family’s Mellower visits to perform Praise Singing. The children are not allowed to leave the house because their dad is the Chief of Security and is afraid the children will get hurt.  Tendai wants to leave his house because he feels trapped by his parents rules and he wants more freedom. One day Tendai decides to go on an adventure into the town market with his brother and sister.  That was a mistake! The children are kidnapped by a woman named the She Elephant and she wants to sell them to The Masks. The kids meet a man named the Trashman who helps them and they also meet the detectives The Ear, the Eye and The Arm.  Tendai, Rita and Kuda still run into a lot of trouble throughout the story but in the end The Ear, The Eye and The Arm help the kids defeat The She Elephant and The Masks. Finally the kids get to go home with their parents and they celebrate Tendai’s 14th birthday. Tendai’s mother and father realize that they need to let the kids have more freedom and Tendai is happy that his father begins to speak to him like he is an adult.  In the epilogue Tendai gets his pilot’s license when he is 16 and then he goes to college to study about medicine. Rita becomes a prize winning math student and Kuda is a famous fighter pilot.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is about a boy named Hugo who lives in Paris around 1930.  Hugo´s dad died in a fire at a museum so Hugo ends up living with his uncle in a train station.  Eventually, Hugo’s uncle disappears and Hugo is left alone to work on the station’s clocks. Hugo enjoys magic, working with clocks and creating mechanical things.  He has a special notebook from his father with sketches of an automaton in it. The automaton is suppose to write a note but until Hugo can fix the automaton he will never know what the note says.  Throughout the story, Hugo encounters several obstacles that keep him from being able to fix the automaton. With help from his friends Isabelle and Etienne, Hugo is able to prove that he didn’t steal the automaton and that he has been maintaining the clocks in the station by himself.  Because of an incident at the train station, Papa’ Georges saves Hugo and welcomes him into his family and together they share Papa’ Georges movies with the people of Paris. At the end of the story, Hugo builds a new automaton and creates the story The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

For Challenge 2, we created a text message conversation between Tendai (The Ear, The Eye and The Arm) and Hugo (The Invention of Hugo Cabret).  Each character talks about their problem;  not having freedom (Tendai) or having too much freedom (Hugo).  The conversation takes place before each character encounters a big  adventure and then picks back up after that adventure.
