On April 24, educators, university partners, and community organizations from across Western North Carolina came together for the WNC Elementary STEM/Science Community of Practice Spring Retreat. Held at the beautiful Lake Logan Conference Center, the retreat provided a welcoming setting where participants could connect, collaborate, and continue our shared work of strengthening elementary STEM and science education throughout the region. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains and lake, attendees also had the opportunity to refuel, reflect, and unwind in an inspiring environment that fostered both professional learning and meaningful connection.
Participants engaged with colleagues from multiple districts, explored resources and opportunities available through regional organizations, and discussed ways to create meaningful science and STEM experiences for students. Throughout the retreat, educators explored approaches to phenomena-based learning, considering how real-world events and observable phenomena can spark student curiosity, drive inquiry, and support deeper understanding of science concepts. The retreat highlighted the power of collaboration and reinforced our shared commitment to supporting high-quality, equitable science instruction for all learners.

A special thank you to all participants, presenters, partners, and organizations who contributed to the success of the retreat. Your willingness to share expertise, ask questions, and work together continues to strengthen STEM and science education across Western North Carolina.

We look forward to continuing this work together and exploring new opportunities to support teacher leadership, regional partnerships, innovative STEM learning experiences, and the implementation of phenomena-based science instruction that engages students in authentic sensemaking.
