Susan “Susie” O. Stepp

Susan “Susie” Oates Stepp, a beacon of kindness and love, passed away on April 14, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on October 20, 1947, in Washington, D.C., Susan spent her life with an open heart, a spirit dedicated to helping others, and a quick wit that had everyone laughing. She resided in Matthews, North Carolina, where she touched countless lives.

Susan’s passion extended to all those in need, whether on two legs or four. Her home was always open to anyone seeking support or comfort. Known for her kind, compassionate, loving, and sneakily funny nature, Susie was full of life and brought joy to those around her. She had unwavering faith in God and was deeply devoted to her church family at St Michael the Archangel Anglican Church, serving as a Bible Woman, the Director of the Alter Guild, and the Parish Administrator. She found immense joy in her service and spending time within its community. Susan was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed a decades-long weekly game night with her dear friends.

Susie dedicated her professional life to financial accounting after earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Western Carolina University, Class of 1969.

One of her family’s fondest memories was teasing her with love about her endearing habit of always being a little late.

Susie is survived by her beloved children, Derek Stepp and his wife Heather, and Kadi Moffitt and her husband Mark Laquihon. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Olivia Stepp (22), Stella Stepp (16), Declan Moffitt (16), and Landry Moffitt (14).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Author Edwin Oates and Roma Shook Oates, and her brothers, William Oates and Johnny Oates.
