With heavy hearts, yet unwavering hope in Jesus Christ, we announce the passing of Daniel Hugh Balcome, who entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on July 7, 2026, at the age of 77. He passed away peacefully at his home in Wake Forest, North Carolina, surrounded by his loved ones.
Dan was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, educator, mentor, and friend. Family was at the heart of Dan’s life, and he cherished every relationship God graciously placed along his journey. Dan was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor. He was always ready to laugh, eager to make others laugh, and had a special gift for bringing joy to those around him.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 28, 1948, Dan was raised in Simpsonville, where his love for faith, family, and community first took root. A gifted athlete, he excelled in both football and track at Hillcrest High School, continuing to compete in both sports while attending Mars Hill College. The discipline, perseverance, and teamwork he developed through athletics helped shape the man he would become. Throughout the years, Dan maintained many lifelong friendships that began during those formative years. He was deeply respected by teammates, classmates, and friends alike.
While serving in the United States Army Reserve, Dan earned his Master’s degree from Western Carolina University. During this time, he became the director of a camp for children with learning disabilities, where his compassion and gift for encouraging young people first became evident. He later devoted his career to education, beginning as a middle school teacher in North Carolina public schools before serving as Headmaster of Trident Academy.
From 1978 to 1992, Daniel served as Headmaster of Trident Academy, where his visionary leadership helped shape the school into a thriving educational community. Dedicated to serving students with language based learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD, he believed every child deserved the opportunity to succeed. During his tenure, the school experienced significant growth in enrollment, expanded its campus with the construction of a new school, and strengthened its mission. His leadership left a lasting impact on Trident Academy and on the countless students, families, educators, and loved ones whose lives he touched.
Never one to shy away from new opportunities, Dan also enjoyed a successful career in real estate, serving the Raleigh area for more than twenty years. Known for his honesty, integrity, and genuine care for others, he became a trusted advisor and a beloved real estate professional, earning the admiration and respect of clients and colleagues.
Above all, Dan treasured his family. Among God’s most precious blessings in his life was his beloved wife, Brenda Balcome, with whom he shared 35 years of marriage. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring love, steadfast commitment, and God’s faithfulness through every season of life. Their home was filled with faith, love, laughter, and countless cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew them.
Dan was a proud and devoted father to Amy Balcome Hill (Matt), Dayna Balcome Grayson (Peter), and Jonathan Balcome (Kristina). He loved each of them deeply and took great pride in the people they became. He also lovingly welcomed his stepchildren, Shay Robbins (Gregory) and Robbie Payne (Marielle), as cherished members of his family.
He was a devoted grandfather to Burns, Grant, Barrett, Riley, Nina, Poppy, Hugh, Faris, Bradley (Annahitta), Peyton (Madeline), Brooke (Camden), Luvis, Sinai, and Sebastian, and a proud great-grandfather to Maizi, Sky, and Miles. Nothing brought Dan greater joy than gathering with his family, celebrating life’s milestones, and watching each new generation grow.
Dan is also survived by his beloved brother, Michael Balcome (Sharon), brother-in-law Phillip Johnson (Carol), sister-in-law Pam Johnson, and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Hugh Balcome and Doris Burns Balcome; his parents-in-law, James Murray Johnson and Lillian Sealy Johnson; and his brother-in-law, Jimmy Johnson.
While Dan’s accomplishments were many, those who loved him will remember something far greater than the positions he held or the success he achieved. They will remember a man who lived with grace, treated everyone with dignity, quietly served others, loved deeply, and faithfully followed Christ. His life was a testimony that true greatness is measured not by recognition but by the lives touched through kindness, humility, and love.
Although our hearts are broken by his passing, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. We find comfort knowing that Dan has heard the words every faithful believer longs to hear:
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
