Marrah Ste. Marie, Event Coordinator for SPJ, is organizing a joint bake-off fundraiser with HomeBase on April 17 in the University Center.
The fundraiser is an event where different clubs and organizations at Western will compete against each other to discover who has the best treats. There will be three winners, one chosen by a panel of HomeBase judges, the second will be a fan favorite decided by student votes and the third will be from the table with the most tickets. Each winner receives a unique trophy.
Students can purchase five tickets for $5 and each ticket will get them one dessert from any table they choose.
SPJ, the Society of Professional Journalists, does a fundraiser for HomeBase every year. HomeBase is an outreach group whose purpose is to “provide resources and support to all students seeking physical, emotional or spiritual support.”
“We work with HomeBase every year because it is such an important resource for a lot of students and a vital part of our community,” said Ste. Marie. “We want to provide help to an organization that does so much for so many people.”
The goal of the fundraiser is to raise at least $300 for HomeBase and bring awareness to the organization and how they work with students. All proceeds received from the bake-off will go to support HomeBase.
“We hope organizations competing will see this as an opportunity to be involved and help the community while also raising awareness for their groups and potentially recruit new members,” said Ste. Marie.
An additional objective of the fundraiser is to get students involved in the organizations beyond a donation. The event will generate excitement and friendly competition.
“When you do things like a bake sale, interaction with students doesn’t extend beyond the transaction,” said Ste. Marie. “However, by creating a competitive event that will bring students together to support organizations and eat lots of treats you’re creating memories, generating excitement, raising awareness and providing students a chance to network.”
Other clubs and organizations are encouraged to join the fundraiser and raise awareness for HomeBase.
