Seven communication students received department-awarded scholarships, which will be effective in the Fall of 2025.

Each student received a scholarship established by former communication department members or partners in the community.

Bethan Wallace and Brooke Soenksen received the Curtis and Enid Meltzer Scholarship. This scholarship was established by Curtis and Enid Meltzer, this scholarship fund provides support to students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in one of the College of Arts and Sciences programs. Curtis enrolled in a number of history courses at Western Carolina University following his retirement in Highlands, North Carolina.

The Roy A. Taylor Scholarship was established by former US House of Representatives member, Roy Taylor, in 1976. It is awarded to a rising senior pursuing a bachelor’s in human communication. Mykala Anderson received this award. Anderson is a double major in communication and Spanish, with a concentration in public relations.

Marie Spencer received the Patrick Carmody Scholarship. This scholarship is endowed in memory of Patrick Carmody, a rising WCU senior majoring in radio and television. This fund provides scholarship support for students majoring in communication. Spencer is a double major in communication and English, with a concentration in journalism.

Established through the generosity of Benny Smith, the Benny Smith Scholarship provides support for students majoring in communication. This year, that student is Morgan Korson. Korson has a double concentration in broadcasting and journalism.

The next scholarship is named for Dr. Kathleen Wright, who served as department head and faculty member in the communication program. Rising sophomore, Allie Parsons, received the Kathleen Wright Scholarship. Parsons is a double major in communication and Spanish, concentrating in public relations.

Dani Kluger won the Arthur Anderson scholarship. Endowed through the generosity of Arthur Anderson, this scholarship supports students obtaining a degree in the performing arts, such as theatre, radio and television.

Additionally, eight rising freshmen received the Faw and Richard Gainey Scholarships. These two scholarships were established during the 75th anniversary of the WWCU radio station and provide support for new first-year communication students. They were established by community partners and alumni Chris and Cathy Faw.
