Dr. Betty Farmer, professor of communication and public relations, has been providing leadership communication training for North Carolina Department of Public Health leaders and staff since September 2022.
She collaborates with the NCPH workforce development directors in Regions 2 and 5 to deliver day-long training sessions on a variety of topics, including crisis communications, emotional intelligence, giving and receiving performance feedback, conflict management, public speaking and foundational leadership communication skills, such as building trust and communicating with respect.
This semester, she has provided sessions on managerial and supervisory communication, building trust, listening, conflict management and giving and receiving performance feedback for Region 5 staff in Colfax, NC. She is scheduled to be in McDowell County in May to provide performance management training for Region 2 leaders.
With Erica Thomas, workforce development director for Region 5, she will be presenting a case study of the comprehensive training program Region 5 designed and implemented at the 32nd International Conference on Learning in Granada, Spain in July.
Made possible by the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, these NCPH workforce development training programs are designed to support and develop staff post Covid-19.
A professor at WCU since 1993, Farmer provides communication consulting, training and coaching for a variety of organizations across North Carolina.
