Students from Western Carolina University’s Mock Trial club received several awards at the Atlanta American Mock Trial Association Regionals Tournament on Feb 27 to March 1.

Mock Trial is a competitive club where students act as attorneys and witnesses in simulated courtroom trials. Members have the opportunity to travel across the country for tournaments and improve their communication skills and legal knowledge outside of the classroom.  No experience is required for members, nor are they required to be in communication or law majors. WCU’s Mock Trial is available for anyone interested in expanding their law, public speaking, acting and debate skills.

The Western team won multiple ballots in their victory against Wofford College and Berry College. In addition to that, every team member was ranked one of the best attorneys or best witnesses for at least one trial.

Notably, Jaryn Green, a junior majoring in Political Science and International Studies, won two top attorney awards in the tournament. Her sister Mykah Green, an English major graduate, was the highest ranked witness of the entire tournament.

Ultimately, Western’s team lost in the last trial against Kennesaw State University, which was the highest ranked school of the entire tournament. Despite this, their many successes in the tournament gives credit to the talent of the club members and their potential in this environment.

“This team’s performance was highly impressive, especially considering the context that they are young, less experienced, and up against 24 other schools including places like Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech,” said Gabriel Wisnewski-Parks, professor of communication and faculty advisor for the Mock Trial Club, “Their performance speaks highly of WCU and it showcased the shining talents of students from both Communication and Political Science who have been building the team this past year.”
