On September 12, 95.3 WWCU and Whee-TV teamed up to create a live remote broadcast during Jackson County’s 175th Anniversary Celebration.
Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., student club members of these organizations met to set up, record, facilitate the broadcast, and represent Western Carolina University’s Communication Department. This allowed for the main ceremony to be heard live on the air, and for club members to gain experience interviewing various members of the community, including those from the county’s Chamber of Commerce and Genealogy Department.
The production resulted in positive feedback and WCU exposure to the Jackson County community.
“[The broadcast] is important because it’s building a bridge between Jackson County and WCU to hopefully lead towards more collaborations,” said Nicholle Stuart, 95.3 WWCU’s general manager.
The Jackson County 175th Anniversary celebrated the county’s continued success since its founding in 1851. The event featured live music by Summer Brooks, a bounce house, a cookout, and a time capsule ceremony where visitors were encouraged to bring an item to contribute. The ceremony also hailed the oldest member of Jackson County and Jackson County’s oldest church, who brought over 68 feet of birthday cake for the celebrations.
By combining Jackson County’s and the WCU Communication Departments efforts to produce this event, we celebrate their combined histories and the legacy of this community.
