Funding for Students
Advancing your research and Dissertations with grant funding
Where to Next? Bring Your Ideas to Life.Â
At WCU, we believe in empowering students to pursue bold, innovative research, and we know that external funding can be a vital part of that journey. Whether you are working on your dissertation, conducting fieldwork, developing a creative project, or searching for research fellowship opportunities, securing outside support can open doors to new possibilities.
Why Seek External Funding?
External grants and fellowships can:
- Provide financial support for travel, materials, and living expenses
- Enhance the visibility and impact of your research
- Strengthen your academic credentials
- Connect you with broader scholarly communities
We encourage all students to explore funding opportunities beyond the university. From national fellowships to discipline-specific grants, there are countless resources available to help bring your work to life.
The Submission Process: Collaboration is Key
To ensure the success and compliance of your funding applications, students must work closely with both their faculty advisor and our office before submitting external proposals.
Here’s how to get started:
- Consult your faculty advisor. Discuss your research goals and identify appropriate funding sources together.
- Connect with our office. We will help you navigate application requirements, review your materials, and ensure institutional policies are followed.
- Submit with support. Once your proposal is ready, we will assist with final approvals and submission logistics.
Featured Funding Databases
SPIN is a robust funding opportunity database, containing over 40,000 opportunities from more than 10,000 sponsors that is available to all WCU students. With SPIN, users can save searches and opportunities, share opportunities with colleagues, and choose to receive email alerts when records are added or changed.
Here are some suggestions to get the most benefit from SPIN:
- Take an active role in designing your SPIN funding searches. A SPIN funding search based on keywords that are too broad can generate numerous funding options, some of which may not be suitable for your funding needs. Searches can be refined by using specific keywords, sorting by the sponsor/agency type, specifying the geographical location, and selecting a funding level that best matches your project and needs.
- Using search terms and keywords that are too specific can also yield disappointing results. The InfoEd Keyword Search contains a curated list of search terms that categorize funding opportunities based on the topic.
If you need additional help or would like to set up a training session for your department, please contact Samantha Ellithorpe at sellithorpe@wcu.edu or 828.227.3180.

Internal Funding Opportunities
Western Carolina has a long tradition of supporting undergraduate students’ creative and research-based projects. Funding opportunities are available for students interested in conducting research or creative inquiry and traveling to disseminate research.
Students participating, planning to participate, or having wrapped up a recent project should consider funding opportunities sponsored by the Office of the Provost and campus partners like, the Chancellor’s Office, the Brinson Honors College, and the Graduate School.
WCU Office of National and International Awards
The Office of National and International Awards (ONIA) is dedicated to guiding WCU students and alumni through the process of applying for national and international awards and other funding opportunities. We also coordinate nominations for national fellowships and serve as a resource for students and faculty across campus.
