Homebase FS 2018

In 2018, FS Senators gather at WCU’s Homebase to celebrate the establishment of the FS Student Support Fund

University of North Carolina System will begin its system-wide employee engagement survey beginning on February 4, 2020. This survey, deployed every 2 years, helps the system and individual institutions in its strategic planning by identifying needs and issues that faculty and staff that need to be addressed. On February 4, this survey will be disturbed to all full-time WCU faculty and staff. For questions about the survey, please contact Cory Causby, Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources & Payroll at 828 227-7218, or visit the engagement website in this link.

A high response rate is essential to the conclusions drawn from the survey report. The leadership of the WCU Faculty Senate urge faculty to complete the survey. In 2018, the WCU response rate was 55%. In 2020 we have the institutional goal to meet or exceed that rate.

Here is also an opportunity for faculty to do some good. To motivate faculty-staff survey participation, the University leadership is committed to contributing $5,000 towards to the Faculty Senate Student Support fund should WCU obtain a minimum response rate of 50% (The Staff Senate Scholarship fund would also get that fund). The Chancellor’s office is also committed that for each percentage point above 50%, the University will contribute an additional $100 to each fund.

The Faculty Senate Student Support fund was established by the FS under the then Faculty Chair Brian Railsback to assist students in extreme financial distress. The Faculty Senate Student Support Fund can help with the following.

  • Students receive up to $200 in quick emergency funding
  • A request alerts the university that a student is struggling
  • Students in severe, long-term need will be directed to the Office of Financial Aid
  • As appropriate, students will be directed to other programs of support

To make these available, these are the steps.

  • If you encounter a student in financial distress, contact Lowell Davis (lkdavis@wcu.edu), Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success (828 227-3331).
  • The student will meet with Lowell Davis
  • In consultation with the Office of Financial Aid, the Fund will be deployed to help the student’s immediate need.

This is the time of the year when students start to feel financial stress. As Faculty Chair, I am glad that we can offer students the opportunity to handle crises that would otherwise have ended their college career. Complete the survey, and help WCU and our students!
