Wilbert S. Banks
Wilbert was a self-taught musician. His dedicated appreciation for music began as a teenager when he accepted his first job through a family friend, working as a piano tuner. It was under the tutelage of this employer that he discovered his God-given talent, playing music by ear. Mr. Banks served as Organist, and at times Vocalist, for several churches across the Triad area, a career that spanned more than fifty years. During his career he wrote and produced an eleven-song album titled Tell God. Wilbert was also uniquely skilled in and curious about other aspects of life which include reading braille, recalling facts, and researching family history. He lived in Winston-Salem the majority of his life and, although he was physically blind for more than sixty years, he navigated the city with impressive precision. He greatly valued his independence and is remembered as one of the friendliest people one might ever meet. He spoke highly of the countless community members who took initiative to assist him whenever the opportunity presented itself; every individual gesture, person, and act of kindness he greatly appreciated.
Wilbert is preceded in death by two brothers, Iamisky (Emma) Banks and Zalinor (Lucille) Banks. He is survived by three children, Camille (Darryl) Banks Prince, Natalie (Dwayne) Banks Welcome, and Eric Javon Banks, four grandchildren, Xavier Welcome, Alex Payne, Caleb Welcome, and Jacob Payne, one brother, Gilbert (Wanda) Banks, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, and many other loved ones.
