Book Summary
Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse
A terrible accident has affected Billie Jo’s life in a horrible way. Her mother is gone and her father will not take care of her. The one thing that might make her feel better is playing the piano, but she has injured hands from a fire. To make things worse, dust storms have completely destroyed their farm and other farms nearby in the dusty state of Oklahoma.
Challenge #1:
I made an invention to help Billie Jo play the piano and be happy, I made a particular piano glove that will help Billie Jo play without pain. If she plays the piano with burnt hands, she will injure herself because her hand will make contact with the piano. If she puts the glove on, she will have a soft surface on her hands and a hard surface to strike the keys to not have any injury. I placed little blocks of wood on the fingertips of the glove. There are also popsicle sticks in the glove. Billie Jo will put her fingers under the popsicle sticks so the popsicle sticks would touch the piano instead of her. The reason I invented this is to help Billie Jo play the piano and be joyful during harsh times.
I love this idea! It is super good! – Fiona from PG
Tyler,
What a great invention. I really loved that book – Out of the Dust – especially that it was written in a series of short poems. I can envision Billie Jo using your gloves to play the piano. Good work!

These piano gloves are a wonderful idea and Billie Jo would likely love them. Thanks so much for your sharing this idea.
