Summary of Novel:
“Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline
Ready Player One is a story of a boy named Wade Watts who struggles to find happiness in the real world. Wade also goes by the name Parzival for a game called the OASIS which is a Virtual Reality world in which you can interact and explore. The creator of the OASIS died and upon his death a video was released stating that he died and that he had set up a challenge with “easter eggs” (or hidden clues in a video game) in the OASIS. Whoever reached all three gates and finished them would take control of the OASIS. Each gate has a challenge such as a video game to get the first key to the first gate. The first key had a clue on it to help find the first gate and once the player finished the first gate they would get the key and a clue for the next gate. The OASIS was a very important part of most of the world’s lives, for Wade it was where his mom would take him to read him stories and what his mother would use as a daycare for Wade as a child. The OASIS was where everything took place; sports, school, and special events. The IOI (Interactive Online Industries) was run by a man named Sorrento who wanted to take over the OASIS and make people pay instead of playing for free. In the novel, Wade must team up with some other players and become friends to beat the IOI to the “easter egg” and save the OASIS from being ruined by the IOI. Throughout the book Wade makes several friends whom he teams up with to help him stop the IOI. Some of the friends he meets are Artemis, Aech, Sho, and Daito. As Wade goes along his adventures he finds love and learns a little about how to be happy in real life. The competition puts a lot of pressure on Wade and his friends to save the OASIS. Will Wade and his friends beat the IOI in the race to control over the OASIS? Will he find true happiness in the real world?
