Staff Professional Development Scholarship

The Staff Senate is committed to advocating for and making a difference in the work lives of WCU staff members. It is important for staff to have access to professional development opportunities and we understand that funding isn’t always available to support these activities. This is why we developed the Staff Senate Professional Development fund. The fund is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible staff members to pursue professional development activities. We hope that this fund allows staff to take advantage of professional development opportunities that they may not have had access to otherwise.

Achievements from 2020 – 2021

Fundraising Goal

Goal: Raise $15,000 through events, ornament sales, and other means by June 30, 2021.

Progress: Despite the limitations placed in our community during the COVID-19 pandemic, over $13,000 was raised over the 2020-2021 year. We were short of our $15,000 goal, yet still able to continue strong momentum and support.

Professional Development Fund

Goal: Award $10,000 to eligible staff from the Professional Development Fund by June, 30, 2021.

Progress: $5,846.16 was awarded to qualifying EHRA and SHRA staff to pursue professional development opportunities. Travel restrictions due to COVID-19 limited opportunities, the demand for funding may have been higher if opportunities had not been diminished.

Ornament Sales

Manufactured by incredibly talented WCU engineering students, this ornament was created in partnership with the Cherokee Studies Program and Cherokee Center Staff. The Cherokee syllable Ꮻ is a symbol of place for the Cherokee people. This ornament was made in honor and recognition of the sacred homelands of the Cherokee people, who once resided in the town known as “Two Sparrows Place,” which was located on what is now the campus of Western Carolina University.

Proceeds from this holiday ornament help support scholarships for currently enrolled or accepted students who are children of SHRA and EHRA non-faculty employees and Staff Senate initiatives. Staff Senate was able to award six $1,000 scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Sales are Final. Due to our efforts to reduce face to face contact during the COVID-19 pandemic, orders can be shipped domestically through USPS at a cost of $4.00, or if the purchaser is a WCU employee, Staff Senate will deliver on campus free of charge.
