Staff Senate has launched an ‘Exploring the WNC Mountains’ series to celebrate the 2024-2025 Campus Theme: WNC Mountain Life. This series aims to honor the vibrancy, resilience, and spirit of the Western North Carolina mountains, along with its people, wildlife, and local businesses, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
Exploring the WNC Mountains with Virginia Lunsford:
Virginia Lunsford is an Administrative Support Specialist for Project Discovery at WCU, having joined the team in September 2023. She and her husband moved to Sylva, NC, in February 2022, seeking a place that resonated with their love for the outdoors and community spirit. Western North Carolina, reminiscent of Virginia’s childhood in Australia’s Blue Mountains, was the perfect choice.
The couple enjoys kayaking, hiking, and biking with their Australian Labradoodles. One of their favorite local spots is Blue Ridge, known for its trails, waterfalls, picnic areas, and breathtaking views. They are fortunate to have a view of Blue Ridge close to their home, making it a cherished part of their daily lives.
Virginia also shares some of her favorite places in the area: Bent Willow in Franklin, White Moon in Sylva, and Panacea in Waynesville. For a special treat, they visit Innovation. As a dedicated Yogi, Virginia finds her Zen at Folkmoot in Waynesville with Leigh Ann, Yoga Mill in Sylva with Scott, and Yoga Den in Franklin with Heidi.
To keep the mountains beautiful, Virginia advises: “Leave no trace and get out into nature, no matter the weather, the location, the mood, or the time of day…it will fill your soul.”
