WCU Staff Senate is starting a series titled “Meet a Human Resources Representative.” This series allows faculty/staff across campus to meet our Human Resources staff and learn a few things about them. The first Human Resources Staff represented is Kristi Westphal-Thomas. Kristi has worked at WCU since February 2019 and within the HR department since July 2021.

Kristi is an HR specialist and is in charge of all new hire (staff and faculty) intakes and onboarding. She also handles all international compliance, SHRA applicant qualifying, transcripts and AA-21 credentials for all new faculty, and job fair recruitment. She is also the admin for MyResources and will start marketing it campus wide very soon.

When Kristi was asked why she chose Human Resources as a career she stated “I believe I was always destined to be in Human Resources. Every job I’ve had always had an HR component but was never fully into the profession until 2017 when I was lucky enough to kind of fall into it. From there it became my professional passion to meet and train new hires and to development relationships with them that went beyond onboarding/intakes (I’m also really into employee engagement). I love it so much that I received my master’s in training and development from NC State in 2022 and I do hold an HR Certification (2018) from another UNC System university.”

Kristi’s favorite place to eat on campus is Panda Express. When she was asked what she likes most about working at WCU she stated “The community, the beauty, my coworkers, and the potential for growth. Oh, and one last thing, I’m lucky enough to meet every new hire that starts at this university. The excitement they have on their intake date is the continued excitement I see here on campus- there’s nothing like it.”
