The Western Carolina University Police Department held its third “No Shave” campaign during the university’s winter break as a fundraiser for the Staff Senate Scholarship Fund. A total of 11 officers (1 female and 10 males) participated in the campaign.  Participating officers raised $220 and Mike Byers, WCU’s Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance, matched that amount for a total of $440. As a year-round law enforcement agency, the WCU Police Department has uniform and appearance codes for members of the force, with limitations on male facial hair and females must pin their hair.  The campaign allows for participants to grow facial hair or leave their hair down.

Chief Steve Lillard shared, “I am proud to partner with the Staff Senate again this year to continue this fundraising effort.  I know that the money raised will benefit WCU students and I am often reminding my staff that I want the Police Department to be part of the educational process.  I appreciate the officers that participated and I am looking forward to next year’s event.” The Staff Senate Scholarship Fund was created in 2007 to promote higher education and help relatives of staff members attend WCU.

Chair of Staff Senate, Deidre Hopkins, expressing her gratitude, “I cannot express how honored Staff Senate is to the Chief of Police and his officers for their donation to our scholarship. We truly love their desire to participate and contribute to our scholarship in this way.” For more information, contact Staff Senate at staffsenate@wcu.edu.
