Books in the CFC related to student engagement

Faculty questions about student engagement are common across institutions and higher education. Educational researchers, cognitive scientists, and psychologists continue to learn new things about cognition, learning, and motivation, and some of those best resources and strategies can be found here.

Why are my students not seeing their grades?

Question: Why are students not able to see their assignment grade?

Answer: Check in the Full Grade Center to reflect that the assignment columns are visible to your students.

To make your columns visible in the Grade Center:
  1. In the left column scroll to the Grade Center and click on the triangle to the left of the title (Here is a screen shot of where the Full Grade Center is located)
  2. Click on “Full Grade Center” which will display all your assignments
  3. Click on the circle with a down mark (to the right of the assignment name, circled with red in the screen shot)
  4. When the extended menu drops down select “Hide from Students (on/off)” which will make the assignment grade visible to the students.
*Also make sure you have the My Grades tool link available in your course menu.

* Mobile app versions of these browsers aren’t supported at this time, although users may have success using them.

** Google Chrome versions 42+ and Microsoft Edge do not support NPAPI-type plug-ins, including Java plug-ins and many media browsers plug-ins. Blackboard does not support these browsers for use with the Virtual Classroom and Lightweight Chat tools, the multiple-file upload interface, or embedded media that require NPPAPI plug-ins for viewing.

*** Blackboard Collaborate will not work in this browser.

Tested Devices and Operating Systems

A variety of devices and operating systems were used to test the supported browsers. Support is not limited to these specific operating systems. The desktop browser versions above are supported regardless of the particular device or operating system on which they run.

Operating Systems used in testing

Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, MacOS 10.8, MacOS 10.9, MacOS 10.10, MacOS 10.11, Chrome OS

ChromeOS tested device

Chromebook (Chrome browser; features requiring NPAPI plug-ins are not supported)

Java and Other Browser Plugins

A handful of features in Blackboard Learn require particular additional software to be installed. Without these, the features themselves do not function. For this release of Learn, the following features have plugin requirements:

    • Multiple file uploads in Course Files and Content Collection requires the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from Oracle enabled as a browser plugin. The single file upload tool does not have this requirement. The upload applet is signed by Blackboard and includes a timestamping authority that allows the applet to run even after the certificate has expired.
    • The Virtual Classroom Tools in courses require the JRE from Oracle enabled as a browser plugin. The Virtual Classroom applet is signed by Blackboard and includes a timestamping authority that allows the applet to run even after the certificate has expired.
    • The Meeting Room and Blackboard Collaborate synchronous communication features, available via Building Block, require download and installation of the Blackboard Collaborate  Launcher application, but do not require the Java JRE browser plugin.

JRE versions 7 and 8 are the recommended versions for features that depend on it. JRE version 6 may work, but could result in unexpected behavior. Oracle has acknowledged some security issues with JRE version 6.

Blackboard Learn does not require any other browser plugins. To learn more about browser plugins, assistive technology, and other supporting software, see the Browser Support Policy topic in this section.
